Phil Taylor has collaborated with the artists of Pacifica Quartet, eighth blackbird, the Imani Winds, the Spektral Quartet, the Willamette Chamber Players, and fEARnoMUSIC, among others. His merits include a BMI Student Composer Award and his works have been performed across the United States. He is currently based in Chicago, IL where he pursues a doctorate in composition at the University of Chicago. Central to Taylor’s musical philosophy is the idea that individuals access different levels of comprehension and bonding through music than through language. To that end, while his inspirations often stem from phenomena in nature, architecture, linguistics, literature, and other arts, Taylor incorporates these into abstract musical expressions— through gesture, counterpoint, and transformation— to spark connections and open lines of communication with performers and listeners.
